- concordant: $x_i < x_j$ and $y_i < y_j$; $x_i > x_j$ and $y_i > y_j$; denoted as $C$
- discordant: $x_i < x_j$ and $y_i > y_j$; $x_i > x_j$ and $y_i < y_j$; denoted as $D$
